High school:
At the high school level it is important students get time to work both on technique, skills and applied mediums with both applied mediums as well as digital programs and technology. At this stage my goal is for the students to apply the principles of design and elements of art in their work, as well as develop a personal voice and style. In projects my expectation is that they strive for a mastery of materials and techniques It is important to me that historic and contemporary artists are studied, referenced and explored by the students so that they are not only inspired but see how the work has an impact on them and society. More in depth projects are a good place for both individual work which is necessary for developing ones own eye and hand and group work. which promotes understanding respect and tolerance amongst students.
The examples shown on this page are from an in depth project on maps, that spanned several weeks. Students began in groups, brain storming, using Venn diagrams to map out what qualifies or defines a map. Over the course of the next few weeks the types of maps and concepts were expanded. Students went from mapping their route to school, to mapping time, maps of their hands, three-dimensional maps and maps from varied perspectives. Students explored materials and were given opportunity to use the computer on one map. Students were shown historic and contemporary artists whose work related maps whether abstract, concrete, or conceptual. They saw body maps, maps of events maps of energy, maps that explored concepts aids such as aids in the world
This project was very successful in creating a community with in the classroom and expanding student’s knowledge of materials, process as well as insight into concept and semiotic thought.
