Teaching Statement:
"We are all learning about the world before we even enter it.” Annie Murphy Paul
Our first modality of learning is sensorial and kinesthetic. It is important we keep those neurological pathways in our brain open and exercised throughout our lifetimes. Making art helps us to continue exploring our world, expands our skills in critical thinking, utilize our imagination,, acts as a means of universal communication, and gives a increased awareness to cultural and historical understanding enabling us to see the world and the human condition differently. Art gives all of us a means of self-accomplishment and self-esteem as well as fosters respect and understanding of those around us. As a teacher I see both the importance of working with our hands, using many types of materials and expanding our fine motor skills while improving our ability and craftsmanship. At the same time with the advent of computers we are globally reliant on visual communication and thinking. It is imperative we learn how to finesse and control our visual communication and have a strong understanding semiotic expression and expand our knowledge of cross-cultural differences. My interest as a teacher and artist is to bridge both of these areas in the classroom (whether it be K-12, or College), allowing my students to expand themselves, respect others and the world we live and share.
